Sliding patio doors get used all day, which makes them tricky to dress. Vertical blinds hang in individual vanes that stack neatly to one side, so you can walk through without lifting a heavy shade, and tilt the vanes to direct light.

Today's fabric vertical blinds look much softer than the plastic versions many of us remember. Warm whites and linen tones sit nicely in modern living rooms and let the door stay the bright, open feature it should be.

They are also a practical choice for wide basement windows, rental suites and offices, where durability and simple operation matter.

In winter, a patio door is also a large cold surface. A room darkening fabric vane closed at night can make the area by the door feel a little cosier, and in summer the same vanes tilt to block low evening sun without shutting out the backyard entirely.
